Dr. Dragan Nonić was born in Ćuprija on December 8, 1963, where he finished elementary school and high school (majoring in physics). He completed his studies at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry in 1987. He defended his master’s thesis in 1994, and his doctoral dissertation entitled “Forestry organization in the process of transition: the relationship between the state forest administration and private forest owners”, in 2004 at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry.

In 1990, he was elected as an assistant-trainee in the subject of Organization and Business Administration in Forestry at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry and as an assistant in 1995. He was elected as assistant professor in 2005, associate professor in 2010, and full professor in 2015.

He was engaged as a guest lecturer at the University of Banja Luka – Faculty of Forestry, as well as at the international FOPER I & II master’s studies in the field of Forest Policy and Economics at the forestry faculties of the University of Sarajevo (on the module: Forest policy analysis & evaluation) and Belgrade (modules: Forest Enterprise Management, Small-scale forestry & joint forest management and Forest Products Value Chains & Cluster Management), and he is engaged in doctoral studies at the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Forestry.

During his undergraduate studies, he was a scholarship holder of the University of Belgrade, and during his postgraduate studies, he was a scholar of the Republic Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Artistic Youth of the Republic of Serbia. During the school year 1995/96 he was a DAAD scholar holder at the Institut für Forstwirtschaftslehre of the Technical University in Munich, Germany. In the period 1998‒2000 he was research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institut für Forstökonomie and Institut für Forstpolitik of the University of Freiburg, Germany.

As part of his scientific and professional training, during 2001, he visited the Institut für Forstbenutzung und Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft of the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 2004, he visited Professur Forstpolitik und Forstökonomie ETH University in Zurich, Switzerland and in 2005 the Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy at BOKU University in Vienna, Austria. In 2006, he visited the Institute for Forest Policy and Nature Conservation at the University of Göttingen, Germany.

He was a mentor for 5 defended doctoral dissertations, 3 master’s theses and co-mentor for 6 international master’s theses at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry. He was also a member of the committee for the defence of 2 doctoral theses (at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry), more than 15 master’s theses (at the University of Skopje – Faculty of Forestry, the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Forestry and the University of Belgrade-Faculty of Forestry, of which 8 are on international master’s studies in the field of Forest Policy and Economics).

So far, he has published over 200 scientific and professional papers, 20 of which are in journals from the SCI list. He is the co-author of several monographs and studies of international and national importance, as well as the editor of the international Springer encyclopedia “Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals“, for the “Climate Action” edition (2020).

His works have been cited in 1076 publications (source: Google Scholar, July 12th, 2023). He has participated in a number of international and domestic scientific conferences and symposiums.

Dr. Dragan Nonić participated in about 25 international projects, as a national coordinator (EU-Tempus; DAAD-Fornet), consultant (FAO-TCP & FAO-GCP; World Bank-CEPF), international expert (EU- Phare; World Bank-Indufor), senior researcher (EFI-Prifort; EFI-GOVOR; EFI-NWFPs; ANKLIWA), researcher/participant (COST-FACESMAP; COST-CAPABAL; Fem4Forest-Interreg; IUSDRP; Circle U) or lecturer (EFI-FOPER I & II) and about 10 national projects (of which he was the manager of 2, the project coordinator of 4 and the researcher of 4).

Dr. Dragan Nonić is extremely active in developing international and regional cooperation. He was the organizer of three international conferences in Serbia:

  • Privatization in Forestry, at the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade, 2002 (in cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the University of Freiburg, Germany)
  • Legal Aspects of European Forest Sustainable Development, in Zlatibor, 2005 (in cooperation with the IUFRO organization and ETH University from Zurich, Switzerland)
  • Sustainable Development and Climate Change: Connecting Research, Education, Policy and Practice, at the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade, 2018 (in cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from Germany, the Humboldt Club of Serbia and the University of Belgrade).

He was a member of IUFRO international research groups 3.08.00 (Small-scale forestry), 9.06.00 (Forest law & environmental legislation) and 9.05.03 (Cross-sectoral policy impacts on forests and environment). In addition, he is a member of the Professional Board for Biotechnical Sciences and the Committee for Sustainable Development of the University of Belgrade.

In the period 2014-2021, he was the head of the Chair of Bioeconomy, Policy, and Governance in Forestry and Nature Conservation (previously, the Chair of Economics and Organization of Forestry), and for many years he has been a member of the Educational and Scientific Council of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Forestry. From the academic year 2021-2022, he is the head of doctoral studies in the study program “Forestry” and a member of the editorial board of the Bulletin of the Faculty of Forestry.
