Short description of the project:

The project connects university experts and young researchers from the V4 region and the Western Balkans to exchange knowledge and good practices on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate adaptation and soil and water management. Through workshops and study visits, partners will share practical experiences and contribute to the development of a digital catalogue of locally adapted NbS measures.

  2. Study visits and field-based learning activities on NbS implementation conducted for academic staff, and students

       1.University of Belgrade Faculty of Forestry

University of Belgrade Faculty of Forestry (UBFF) has experience in projects related to sustainable land management, soil conservation and climate change adaptation through participation in international academic and capacity-building initiatives. UBFF coordinated and participated in the Erasmus+ projects: “Agroforestry Practices in the Western Balkans for Sustainable Development: Weaknesses and Strengths” (AGFORWEB) (https://agforweb.org/), which focused on curriculum enhancement, knowledge exchange, and capacity building to support the implementation of agroforestry practices across Western Balkan countries. “Soil Erosion and Torrential Flood Prevention: Curriculum Development at the Universities of Western Balkan Countries” (SETOF) (https://www.setof.org/), which addressed soil erosion and torrential flood prevention through curriculum development and regional academic cooperation.

The Institute of Landscape Water Management carries forward a legacy of education and research originating in 1911 with the establishment of the Institute of Land Reclamation at the former Czech Technical University in Brno. The department adopted its current name in 1991. Since its origins, the Institute has maintained a firm core in environmental and land reclamation engineering. Scientific scope expanded greatly in the 1950s to include soil erosion phenomena and small water reservoir systems. Later initiatives addressed soil cryology, meteorology, air quality protection, and drainage technologies. Today, research covers cutting-edge fields such as AI-driven operational water management and GIS in landscape engineering. Core teaching and research areas also cover hydropedology, nature-based wastewater treatment, land consolidation, surface runoff modeling, and water erosion measurement across sheet and concentrated flow paths.

Role in the project:

The focus is on soil erosion control, landscape water management, climate adaptation, and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to improve soil and water resource resilience. The institution has extensive experience in the land consolidation process and the design of soil conservation and flood protection measures.

     3. Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje , Hans Em Faculty of Forest Science

The Hans Em Faculty of Forest Sciences, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Engineering at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje is a leading higher education and research institution in North Macedonia, dedicated to the sustainable management, protection, and development of natural resources and the environment. The Faculty provides multidisciplinary education and conducts scientific research in forestry, landscape architecture, environmental engineering, land and water management, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management. Its academic and research activities address contemporary environmental challenges, including climate change, land degradation, soil erosion, water resource management, sustainable agriculture, forest and landscape management, and restoring degraded ecosystems. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge, field-based research, technological innovation, and professional practice, the Faculty prepares students and researchers to develop sustainable and nature-based solutions. The Faculty also actively collaborates with national and international academic institutions, governmental organizations, and professional partners, contributing to scientific development, environmental policy, and sustainable development at regional and international levels.

Role in the project:

The Hans Em Faculty will contribute its expertise and experience in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) through international workshops, study visits, MCDA-based assessments, and presentations on national practices. It will also provide North Macedonian case studies and good practices for the digital catalogue and support project dissemination through its institutional and academic networks.

     4. Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra

The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SUA) is a leading higher education and research institution with a strong international portfolio in agriculture, food technology, environmental sciences, and sustainable rural development. The Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering and its Institute of Landscape Engineering focus on sustainable landscape planning and management, land consolidation, GIS and remote sensing, geodesy and cadastre, water management, and soil protection. Research activities address key environmental challenges, including climate change impacts, hydrological processes, soil erosion and land degradation, water resource protection, and the development of effective mitigation and adaptation measures. Particular emphasis is placed on sustainable agricultural landscape management and the application of advanced geospatial, modelling, and monitoring technologies to support evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Role in the project:

The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra will contribute its expertise in sustainable landscape management, soil and water protection, and nature-based solutions (NbS), as well as organizing a workshop and field activities in Slovakia. SUA will also provide Slovak NbS case studies, participate in assessment of their transferability to various regional conditions, and contribute to the project’s digital repository and dissemination activities.
